Day 2 leaving CA.

Did you hear about the dust storm deaths in AZ? We sat on I-10 outside of Picacho, AZ for 1 and 1/2 hours while they cleared a wreck ahead of us. That delay prevented us from reaching Lordsburg,NM which was our destination. Instead we stopped at Willcox, AZ for the night. I heard the rain on the window during the night and gee we woke up to snow everywhere.

The drive from CA to NM.

As most of you know we have left CA. The first night we pulled into Wellton, AZ at 8:30pm. We had lost an hour and had not realize it until the RV park manager came to check us in with her bathrobe on. There was a Santa that sang to us by the office and this sign. I heard a train as we were paying. That should have been a clue. Anyway, the train was 50 yards away with a row of campers even closer than that. My question, WHY? Dave & I had a goodbye CA beer and hit the sack. That's when I timed the train. How often? Every 15 minutes. Not only did it go by but it blew it's horn as well. I asked Dave the next morning how he slept. His comment, not bad after a beer, a sleeping pill and earplugs. I just had to laugh when I saw the camper across from us. It had to be a single guy. I liked the dart board on the side of the camper. Classic!

Time for Xmas cooking. Today Puppy Chow.

Watch out sugar count. Here's the recipe. This was my first time making it. My sister usually does...:-)

Crispix Puppy Chow
12 oz. box Crispix cereal
1/2 cup butter
1 cup peanut butter
12 oz. pkg. chocolate chips
2 to 3 cups powdered sugar

In medium microwave-safe bowl, combine butter, peanut butter and chocolate chips and microwave on high for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring once during cooking, until mixture is melted and smooth. Place the cereal in another large bowl and pour the melted mixture over the cereal. Stir until the cereal is thoroughly coated. Pour the powdered sugar into a large plastic food bag. Pour the coated cereal into the powdered sugar and shake until it is well covered with the sugar. Pour the cereal onto wax paper to cool and dry. Store in tightly covered containers at room temperature.

A donut machine, naked people, tall people, lots of people, cops and fried coke?

It was a party. The donut machine was neat. I'm always on the lookout for a job so we could write off our travel expenses maybe that would be a good part time business. They had a kitchen aid mixing the batter and then the machine did the rest. The two people did the powdered sugar or cinnamon & sugar coating. Price was $2.50 for 10. We saw naked people, one tall person, a cop riding a Sedgeway and fried coke. How weird is that?

Off to the tamale festival.

My pictures to follow at the next posting.

History of the festival:

It all started in 1992 with an idea by Dave Hernandez, a member of the Downtown Indio Merchants Association.

The rich heritage of the tamale, consistent community support and hard working tamale makers have created the festival's tremendous success.

Recently, the Food Network-TV ranked the Indio International Tamale Festival in the top 10 "All-American Food Festivals" in the nation!

Festival's Guinness World Records:

The World's largest Tamale-over 1 foot in diameter and 40 feet in length, Dec. 4, 1999. The World's largest tamale festival-with 120,000 in attendance, Dec. 2-3, 2000.

I could not find a photo of the largest tamale, oh well.

Snow in the hills and Airstream campers rally.

We had snow on the mountain tops. It clouded over and the wind blew and it rained. Not much of a rain but WOW... It was the first drops since we arrived here in October. That was about a week ago. A few days ago the Airstreamer's started checking in. They are cute little guys. Way too small for us full timers. The first photo is a 1949. The owner took 4 months to completely restore it. I got to go inside. It is cute. Plus their dog Lucy is a hoot!

Hair today.... Gone tomorrow...........

Yup, I did it again. Dave just looks at me and shakes his head. Over 20 years ago I did this and that is when I met Kathy, (Colorado of course), who has been cutting my hair for that long. I called her today to see if she made "house calls"! It has turned into $60.00 yesterday and $30.00 today to fix yesterdays mess. Yup....The photo's are before, after 2 cuts at the original perm place and the final result at the new place. CA and me just aren't on the same page.
